Embryo freezing is the preservation, by freezing, of any additional fertilized eggs (embryos) you produce. These embryos can be thawed out and transferred for use in the future.
We recommend this method of storing sperm for our male patients. You may want to store your sperm before having a vasectomy or undergoing cancer treatments. The sperm is frozen and can be thawed out and used in the future.
Directed egg donation occurs when a woman receives eggs from a known female donor. They will be fertilized by her partner's sperm in a laboratory dish. For some women, directed egg donation may be the only to have a child, especially in cases where infertility is a result of poor egg quality due to:
- Advancing age
- Poor response to fertility medications
- Previous surgical procedures
- Genetic or medical factors such as chemotherapy treatments
Egg donors remain unknown to the recipient unless other arrangements have been made. Our egg donors go through testing to ensure their suitability - their personal and family medical history is carefully screened to identify genetic or other factors.
After going through the daily injections, blood tests, ultrasounds, and finally the egg retrieval, we found out we only had one egg. Dr. Roth called me after hours to explain the results and at one point he said, "all you need is one egg and one sperm." Obviously not the most optimal situation, but his reassurance helped us get through the weekend. One embryo made it to the next cell stages and was to be implanted the following day. We were overwhelmed and tried to remain cautiously optimistic. I didn't get out of bed for four days and did everything Dr. Roth suggested."
