Blastocyst Transfer
As a general rule, we will transfer two blastocysts. Sometimes but rarely, we will transfer three in older patients and sometimes only one in other patients.
- Embryos are placed into a very soft flexible transfer catheter, which is passed through your cervix and into your uterine cavity under ultrasound guidance.
- When positioned the embryos are transferred. The transfer takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
- Drink 2 to 3 - 8-ounce glasses of water 1-hour prior to transfer.
We would like you to have a semi-full to full bladder prior to your transfer so we can get a better visualization of your endometrium and ensure that the catheter tip is in the correct position.
- We will ask you to stay for about 1-hour following the transfer
- We will also ask that you rest with minimal activity over the next 48- hours. You are allowed to take a shower and get up to eat, but in general, we would like you to be very quiet for 48-hours.
A large study has compared pregnancy rates in women who were asked to take it easy for 48-hours and women who were allowed to have normal activities during this time. Pregnancy rates in both groups were the same, however, as a precaution we still believe that minimizing your activities over the next 48-hours may be beneficial.
- Refrain from intercourse for about 4 days following your egg retrieval/embryo transfer.
After your embryo transfer:
We would like you to have your pregnancy test (BhCG) twelve days after your embryo transfer.
If your test is positive, we will arrange for an ultrasound about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks later to determine if there is a positive fetal heart and determine how many embryos have implanted.
