Sonohysterogram (SHG)
A sonohysterogram is where a fluid is injected into the uterus and fallopian tubes, and an ultrasound examination is completed.
Newer techniques such as sonohysterography provide us with a detailed assessment of the uterine cavity. If abnormalities are found we may recommend a hysteroscopy, laparoscopy or tubal surgery.
These tests are preferably conducted in the first half of the cycle in order to avoid damaging or dislodging a released egg or embryo. If there is any chance you are pregnant you should not have either of these tests.
- You may feel slight discomfort during or after these procedures
- Other risks may include infection, bleeding, and in rare cases, an allergic reaction to the dye
- You may take two ibuprofen (AdvilT) tablets one hour before these procedures as long as you are not allergic to this medication
